Roll and Read is an annual event sponsored by Ringgold County Parents as Teachers to promote healthy living and literacy to families. On September 29, nearly 60 people, including mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends, brought children to participate in the 1-mile walk with stories along the way. The walk began at Mabel Rice Park, where free water was provided by Hy-Vee and free snacks were provided by CGI.
Readers at the story stops included Ranger Kate Zimmerman, representing Ringgold County Conservation; Jane Lawhead, representing Ringgold County Hospital; Jennifer Creveling, Parents as Teachers Parent Educator; and Amy Ford, representing Parents as Teachers Advisory Council.
Each child was able to take home a book donated to the program by Ellston Library. Families also had the opportunity to learn about Graysen’s Lending Library at Mabel Rice Park, a library developed by Kim and Dara Greenland in memory of their daughter. Children can come to the library to find a new book to take home or to enjoy at the park.
