There are many “myths” about becoming a parent that can play a role in Postpartum Mood Disorders (PPMD). There may be expectations that one should be happy all the time, babies are perfect, and that life falls right back to normal. For many mothers and fathers, these expectations can be met with depression, anxiety, guilt and shame.
PPMD includes a variety of phases: the postpartum phase, baby blues, depression, anxiety disorders, panic and psychosis. Although not every parent struggles after a child enters their home, some do; and we want you to know you are not alone.
“He’s just a baby. He doesn’t know I’m tired and stressed out.” “Yes, I’m sad, but I love my baby.” These are just a few of the things we want to address with all parents. Attachment, your temperament, and interaction with your child make all the difference in how they see the world. We will not be discussing personal experiences, but sharing information, signs and symptoms to be aware of, and what you can do should you or someone you know has any concerns.
